Annual Burns Night Supper by Caledonian Society of Sri Lanka to held at Taj Samudra
The Caledonian Society of Sri Lanka will hold the Annual Burns Night Supper on the 8 February at the Taj Samudra Hotel Colombo.
A Burns supper is a celebration of the life and poetry of the poet Robert Burns, author of many Scots poems.
Burns suppers are most common in Scotland and Northern Ireland but occur wherever there are Burns Clubs, Scottish Societies, expatriate Scots, or aficionados of Burns’ poetry. It is a particularly strong tradition followed in various countries throughout the world.
Amongst many other dignitaries, this year’s Burns Night Supper will be attended by Grizelda Gordon, family member and owners of William Grant & Sons, the only family-run Distillers to have a portfolio of brands like Glenfiddich, world’s most awarded single malt scotch whiskies; The Balvenie, world’s most handcrafted single malt; Grant’s, world’s no. 3 blended scotch whisky and Hendrick’s, Wall Street recommended ‘Best Gin In The World,’ along with many more.
Gordon has been back and forth to Sri Lanka many times on tsunami-related charity work over the past few years.
The Burns Night Supper and the festivities surrounding the day will follow ancient Scottish traditions with a toast “To the Haggis”. The fact that such traditional events continue to this day demonstrates Sri Lanka’s continued close association with the United Kingdom and respect for each other’s traditions.
