Brown & Company PLC together with the George Keyt Foundation is proud to host a diverse collection of contemporary art with the Nawa Kalaakaruwo exhibition at the University of Visual & Performing Arts Colombo for the third consecutive year.
Presented annually by the George Keyt Foundation, Nawa Kalakaruwo provides a platform for versatility and innovation, justifying the dictum of the foundation, ‘opportunity for art’ for emerging artists from across the island to showcase their flair of art.
The artists exhibiting at Nawa Kalakaruwo have evolved from the George Keyt Foundation’s annual artistic ventures of Young Contemporaries and Kala Pola, each labour enhancing their potential and confidence. As the Chairman of the George Keyt Foundation Cedric de Silva observes, their handling of the chosen medium, the conception and imaginative richness brought into their work reflect exceptionally high levels of confidence and versatility.
From untitled work to a myriad of canvasses capturing landscapes, human ethos and passions, the exhibition encapsulates diversity in a rich concoction of artistic material.
Sharing his maiden experience at Nawa Kalakaruwo, Aruna (26), said, “what is unique about the experience is not only the diversity of artistic expression the exhibition offers, but also the cross-cultural dialogue which is very stimulating.”
This initiative has created opportunities for emerging artists and designers to apply their skills and develop their practice while it also provides new models for dialogue and collaboration between artists and designers, organisations and the industry.
Browns Group of Companies has identified IT education and development of the arts as two of the main platforms on which it bases its social responsibility activities. The company has also finalised a structured format of CSR projects to uplift the standard of rural children by providing them with IT education which will be a key conduit to make them active participants in the global village.
The exhibition which was declared open by Chairperson of LOLC Rohini Nanayakkara on 2 June will be open till 9 June from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the J.D.A. Gallery, University of Visual & Performing Arts, Horton Place, Colombo 7.
