Once again, the Council for Business with Britain invites schools to take part in an innovative, creative and stimulating theatrical experience, for a worthy cause: To raise funds for the English language teacher training program in rural schools. This is an opportunity for students to gain immense satisfaction by showcasing their talent as well as reaching out to those less fortunate. Why drama? Of course, school children of all ages would like to help those less fortunate than themselves. If you are not yet of the age when you can reach for your cheque book and make a sizeable contribution to the charity of your choice, what do you do? Being part of a performance to help those less needy is a wonderful way of developing yourself and reaching out to others at the same time The study of literature and theatre craft is, in essence, the study of human nature. In today’s world the ability to understand and evaluate those around us is a highly prized quality. Whatever your chosen career is you need to be able to understand, analyse and respond to those you work with as well as your clients. Through drama you become another personality. Adopting a persona completely different from your own makes you aware of the psychology of different personalities and how they react to a variety of situations. Finally, there is the thrill of the performance. You rehearse till you’re ready to drop. Then the great day comes and you are on stage and all eyes are on you. You hold the audience spellbound as you perform. Then the final applause drowns your ears. It is hard to find a more stimulating, memorable experience. CBB – ELT Project Since 2005, the Council for Business with Britain (CBB) has been working through the British Council to deliver its successful and well regarded CBB – English Language Teacher Training Project (CBB-ELT Project). This is being conducted with the approval of the Ministry of Education and has been built up over a number of years. The program is now working extremely well and is into its seventh year. The overall goal of the program is to upgrade the English skills of pupils and this is achieved through improving the quality of the teaching practice in their schools. Teachers use the new knowledge and inspiration gained from the training to deliver more motivating lessons with a communicative focus so that pupils’ real language skills are improved. The project has trained a cadre of mentors from the Ministry of Education’s Regional English Support Centres (RESCs) ensuring a wide geographical coverage across Sri Lanka. The mentors deliver in-service teacher training to teachers in their areas using a distance learning course (branded as ‘the CBB distance training course’) which leads to the internationally recognised University of Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT). Teachers following the training also receive a CBB / British Council (BC) Certificate. The project therefore functions on two levels: Training mentors to facilitate the CBB distance training course and training teachers through the CBB distance training course.
