Chhimi Tenduf-La, author of The Amazing Racist will be signing books between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday 7 February at Barefoot Bookshop, 704, Galle Road, Colombo 3. “I have never been so excited before about sitting in one spot for six hours, although the fear is that I could have nothing to do if no one turns up. Having said that, Barefoot is a lovely place to be and I will, no doubt, take credit for anything they sell that day,” says Chhimi. “I use real people in my books, so those that turn up will be the heroes in book 3, those that don’t will be the villains. The Amazing Racist has been selling well, and stocks have run out at most shops, so we have held back stock for the signing, I hope I don’t end up looking like a lemon next to a massive pile of books.”
Hachette India released Tenduf-La’s debut novel, The Amazing Racist, worldwide at the beginning of the New Year. Amish Raj Mulmi of Hachette India, said, “Chhimi’s book, The Amazing Racist, is a delightful debut that was a pleasure to read and work on; a superbly human story that takes the reader on a journey of ups and downs, peppered with memorable characters and extraordinary moments... The Amazing Racist kept me engrossed, and made me connect with the characters, as no other novel has.”
Tenduf-La was signed up by leading literary agent, Kanishka Gupta, in March 2014. Gupta promptly sold the international rights to Tenduf-La’s first two novels to the Indian arms of two of the biggest trade publishers in the world. “Chhimi is an extraordinary talent with a fabulous sense of humour and feel for setting,” Gupta said. “I think it’s just a matter of time before he makes his presence felt internationally.” Tenduf-La’s second novel, ‘Panther’, will be published by Harper Collins India in July.
The youngest son of Elizabeth Moir MBE and the late Kesang Tenduf-La, Chhimi is half Tibetan and half English but has been in Sri Lanka since 1982, except when he was studying at Eton College and Durham University or working for Ernst & Young in London.
The Amazing Racist is available at Vijitha Yapa, Barefoot and Trunk; order online from Takas.lk, with free delivery within Colombo.
