The Sacred Cantata ‘Olivet to Calvary’ will be presented this Passiontide by the Colombo Philharmonic Choir on Wednesday, 16 April 2014 at St. Andrew’s Scots Kirk, Galle Rd., Colombo 3.
This early 20th century work by British composer John Maunder, recounts the events of the last few days of the earthly life of Jesus Christ as recorded in the Gospels. Maunder is renowned for his apparently inexhaustible flow of melodic ideas and the skillful weaving of his colourful harmonic fabric around them. ‘Olivet to Calvary’ is one of his best-loved works.
The Guest-Soloist at this performance is Asitha Tennekoon, tenor, who has numerous operatic and concert successes to his credit in Europe and the US, as well as in Colombo. Featured as the baritone soloist is Laknath Seneviratne. Laknath is well known to Colombo audiences, having appeared as soloist in several concert and theatrical performances in recent years. Denham Pereira, Organist and Director of Music at St. Andrew’s Scots Kirk will preside at the organ and the Colombo Philharmonic Choir will be under the direction of Manilal Weerakoon. The performance takes place at 7 p.m. and is supported by sponsorship from the British High Commission in Colombo.
