The winning photograph: a well-timed moment captured during the bridal preparation of a traditional Sri Lankan Hindu wedding
From a background in engineering that he turned into a professionally-trained photojournalism career, Colombo-based photographer Geeshan Bandara has earned global recognition and prestige in the industry by winning multiple awards at international wedding photography competitions.
Geeshan was recently awarded a prestigious Fearless Award from their most recent collection: Collection 27, June 2015. Fearless Awards are a selectively curated set of the finest images that redefine wedding photography, and is contested by the best photographers from around the world.
Fearless Photographers is an international society that counts the best wedding photographers in the world among its members. The society is heavily influenced by a documentary-style approach to wedding photography.
Geeshan brings prestige to Sri Lanka as the first locally based photographer to win an esteemed Fearless Award. The winning image is one of Geeshan’s personal favourites: A well-timed moment captured during the bridal preparation of a traditional Sri Lankan Hindu wedding.
In May 2015, Geeshan was the first Sri Lanka-based photographer to receive two awards from the Professional Wedding Photographers of Canada (PWPC) for their Spring Contest 2015. Geeshan’s images placed 5th in the Bride & Groom Portrait and 9th in the Bridal Party Portrait categories.
PWPC is recognised as the only organisation uniting qualified wedding photographers across Canada whose eligibility is based on strict industry guidelines that includes adherence to a code of conduct.
Geeshan is a Canadian-trained photojournalist and chose to return to Sri Lanka in 2010 to pursue commercial and wedding photography. In addition to commercial and wedding shoots shot under Geeshan Bandara Photography, he developed the brand U&G Photography.
U&G Photography is a small team of talented and enthusiastic photographers who between them have captured over 500 weddings, including the grand, opulent weddings so popular across South Asia, to fun, intimate and private destination weddings.
“We are unobtrusive, and ever-vigilant. We believe in capturing the beauty and sentiment of a day as it unfolds, especially all those moments that often go unnoticed,” said Geeshan of his approach to wedding photojournalism.
“Sri Lanka is a beautiful, year-round wedding destination with some of the most sought-after locations in the world. I find that my clients are increasingly seeking documentary-style wedding photography,” he added.
Geeshan is a member of the International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers, Fearless Photographers and the Professional Wedding Photographers of Canada.
