Moving Out is an initiative by UZ Arts who have been running an international residency and organising events in Sri Lanka since 2002. The Sura Medura International Artist Residency Program brings together artists from across Europe to create work inspired by Sri Lanka and its people often working with the local community and artists. The program is in collaboration with the Visual and Performing Arts University in Colombo whose students often participate in creating the work.

“The idea of the festival was to move out from the normal gallery or performing space of the artist and to create a dialogue among the community using public spaces as the exhibiting platform. This year we have artists from different disciplines from across Europe to showcase their work and decorate Hikkaduwa with their artistic flare,” UZ Arts Director Neil Butler stated.

Moving Out 2016 will feature sound works, land art, installation, print work and video by Artist and Illustrator based in Edinburgh – Natasha Russel, Visual Artist and Sculptor based in Manchester – Sumit Sarkar, Composer and Sound Artist based in Glasgow – Nichola Scrutton, Video mapping artist from Australia Rose Staff. Team Moving Out is also delighted to facilitate returning resident artists Video and Text artist from Galsgow – Stephen Hurrel, Sculptor and Performer based in Graz, Austria – Samson Ogiamien and Artist, Sculptor, Musician and Audio Installation designer from Czech Republic – Martin Janicek.
