National Canadian Film Day comes to Sri Lanka

The High Commission of Canada to Sri Lanka and Embassy to the Maldives have announced that they will be celebrating National Canada Film Day and Canada 150 on 19 April, with a screening of ‘French Immersion’ – a uniquely bilingual Canadian comedy in honour of Canada’s sesquicentennial anniversary. 

The event will take place at the Goethe Institute, 39, RG Senanayake Mawatha, Colombo 7 at 2 p.m. and will be followed by a moderated panel discussion on bilingualism, pluralism, diversity as a unifying strength and national languages – an area of longstanding Canadian engagement and support in Sri Lanka. Among the panellists will be officials from the Ministry of National Co-existence Dialogue and Official Languages, civil society organisations engaged in promoting national languages and reconciliation as well as youth groups.

National Canadian Film Day 150 (NCFD 150) is a massive one-day celebration of Canadian cinema in honour of the nation’s sesquicentennial anniversary. Great Canadian movies will be available on air, online and at over 1,700 screenings in cinemas, libraries, public squares and elsewhere. Screenings showcasing the best in Canadian film will take place across Canada and internationally, with over 60 events taking place around the world. With free events happening across every province and territory, many involving Canadian film talent, NCFD 150 — a Canada 150 Signature Project — promises to be the largest film festival in the world. 

National Canada Film Day in Sri Lanka is presented by the High Commission of Canada to Sri Lanka and Embassy to Maldives and REEL CANADA, an organisation that has been introducing Canadian film to high school students and new Canadians since 2005. NCFD 150 is a tremendous opportunity for Canadians and their international friends to gather and enjoy the wealth of work by their nation’s storytellers. With the help of partners and audiences in every corner of the country and the world, NCFD 150 will put Canadian cinema and their unique nation in an unprecedented spotlight.
