A 30-minute documentary, ‘Echoing Hills’ on the history of the plantation Tamils is being screened this evening (Friday, 5 February) at the Tharangani Theatre – National Film Corporation.
The screening will be in the presence of President Maithripala Sirisena. This event will also be attended by Minister of External Affairs of India Sushma Swaraj, who is here to participate in the 9th Session of the India-Sri Lanka Joint Commission co-chaired by her and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka. Among other matters they will also discuss social, cultural and educational issues.
The documentary film depicts the story of the indentured labour brought to Sri Lanka by the British in the 1800s and their current status. It was only in 2001 that all those resident in Sri Lanka were granted full citizenship.
