Known as the man of many tones, the composer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist and singer Rukshan Perera is ready to start the New Year on a musical note and is gearing up for his annual concert on SUNDAY 7th February 2016 at the Bishop’s College auditorium. Born to a musical family in the musical town of Moratuwa, Rukshan as a teenager performed with Clarence Wijewardena and the Super Golden Chimes, and then studied jazz under Milt Hinton while studying in the university in New York, and the rest is history - critiques have noted that ‘Rukshan Perera is an accomplished, highly experienced and insanely talented musician’.
Rukshan has delighted audiences around the world for several years with his commitment to music performing at jazz/pop concerts in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, New Jersey, Boston, Chicago, Texas, Minnesota, Canada, India, Dubai, Afghanistan, Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. This will be his 6thannual concert in a row since returning to Sri Lanka from the USA, and for those of you who have yet to experience his magic, this is truly a unique‘must see/must feel’ performance.
This year’s concert is in aid of Sunera Foundation, an approved Charity working for the up-liftment of differently-abled young persons in Sri Lanka, using the medium of performing arts, with the intention of integrating them into the society. Sunera Foundation was established in the year 2000 and is currently conducting 30 weekly workshops throughout Sri Lanka, including Northern and Eastern Provinces as well as the Plantation Sector. Cooking up a storm, this multi-instrumentalist, composer and singer will showcase his original material with lyrics that touch your heart, beautiful melodies and arrangements with sophisticated harmonies covering topics of current social significance - a song highlighting child abuse in Sri Lanka, a song on religious harmony, a tribute song to the champion of reconciliation and Nobel Laureate Nelson Mandela, his famous “What Time Is It?”with Rukshan at the piano(one of the favorites among his fans), and the hilarious “Gossip Queen” with a special act on stage.
This year’s theme song“ Walk On the Rainbow” is dedicated to the differently abled children of Sri Lanka. Last year’s audience was blown away with the song “Backwaters with Raj”, an instrumental with a haunting melody using flutes and violins that transported the audience to Kerala Backwaters.
With many new Acapella and other compositions, this concert will feature Rajitha Rupesinghe, Clifford Richards, Choro Calibre, Melantha Perera, Colombo Brass Ensemble…and more.
Rukshan’s fan base has grown in Sri Lanka and abroad in the last few years with a CD and 2 DVDs selling at “Torana” and around the world. His fans are also musically inclined and enjoys the challenging music showcased by Rukshan at his concerts year after year and look forward to more surprises every year.
