Barefoot Bookstore (706 Galle Road, Col 3) will be hosting a book signing by Afdhel Aziz, author of the new novel ‘Strange Fruit’, on Saturday 24 January from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.  ‘Strange Fruit’ is about Maya, who as a child, was forced to flee Sri Lanka following the 1983 riots. As a fiercely independent young woman, she returns to explore the country of her birth, when she falls deeply, serendipitously in love with gentle, romantic Malik. But tragedy strikes when her mother is killed in a terrorist attack, setting into motion a life-changing chain of events. From raves on moonlit beaches and secret drag balls on private islands, to encounters with death squads in forests dense with unspeakable secrets..... ‘Strange Fruit’ is a lyrical love story and a mesmerising journey into the heart of darkness that beats deep within the paradise that is Sri Lanka. Nayomi Munaweera, author, ‘Island of a Thousand Mirrors’ says that it ‘lovingly chronicles both the beauty and tragedy of Sri Lanka… races to a conflagration of a conclusion’, while Romesh Gunasekara, author of ‘Reef’ and ‘Noontide Toll’ called it ‘an ambitious novel of parallel worlds, where recent history makes for difficult choices’. Afdhel Aziz’s first book ‘China Bay Blues’ won the State Literary Award for Poetry, and was short-listed for the Gratiaen Prize, Sri Lanka’s premier literary award. He was a journalist, radio DJ and TV presenter in Sri Lanka for many years.
