Are you in the mood to hear an old but powerful story, with the glory of great music and the best of the thespian tradition? If so, you need to experience ‘The Witness’ – a vibrant musical theatre production, for the whole family, presented by the People’s Church (producers of the ‘Singing Christmas Tree’) this Easter weekend. xfh

The Witness was written by Jimmy and Carol Owens, a husband and wife duo, best known for their album ‘Antshillvania’, which was nominated for the Grammy Award ‘Best Album for Children’ in 1981. Since its debut in 1978, The Witness has been performed around the world, including in Sri Lanka in the early 1990s.

The eye-witness, or the character who narrates the story in The Witness, is a fisherman from an ancient Jewish village whose life was changed completely by his encounter with a man who was unlike anyone else he had ever met. The storyline is simple, dotted with catchy musical numbers, and is surprisingly relevant, no matter where in life you find yourself at.

The cast of The Witness comprises of some well-known personalities in the drama and music circles of Colombo, including Melanie Bibile (Evita (2012), Les Miserables (2015), Aanjanee Fernando nee Jayasooriya (Sound of Music (2008), Rag Doll (2009)), and Ryan Jayatunga (The Witness (1990), who have each had the kind of life transforming experiences that the narrator inThe Witness had, making the production more than just a ‘performance’, or a raw showcasing of talent.  As with all the past productions of the Peoples’ Church, tickets to The Witness are absolutely free of charge, and are required for seating purposes only. If you would like to watch The Witness, which will be staged at the People’s Church on 25 and 26 March, at 6:30 p.m., you may collect your free ticket from the People’s Church (No. 160/30, Kirimandala Mawatha, Narahenpita, Colombo 05).

Come experience The Witness – it is bound to be a lively, fun-filled evening, you will not easily forget.
