The Islamic Finance Forum of South Asia (IFFSA) 2018 under the theme ‘Sustaining Stability in the Region’ will be held for the third consecutive year on 23 October at the Ramada Colombo Hotel.

This annual gathering of Islamic banking practitioners in South Asia, encapsulated under the acronym IFFSA, will take place once again in Sri Lanka.

Whilst blockchain and fintech were the “hot topics” that took centre stage last year, IFFSA 2018 will focus on some of the more contemporary areas, regionally as well as globally.

The impact of the escalating trade war between two of the largest economies of the world simply cannot be overlooked in a regional conference of this nature, especially with the ramifications on trade within and between countries in the region.

The United Nations’ SDG initiatives, especially given its alignment with the espoused objectives of Islamic Banking, is another area that the Conference would focus on, whilst “Risk”, a compelling topic amongst bankers would be re-visited, especially in light of Shariah Compliance risk rising to the fore.

The day’s proceedings will end with a break out session on an ‘invitation only’ basis to discuss the formation of an Association of South Asian Alternate Industry practitioners, an idea first mooted at IFFSA 2017.

State Minister of Finance and Mass Media Eran Wickramaratne will be the Chief Guest. With Pakistan, Bangladesh, Maldives and even Sri Lanka all enjoying buoyant markets, the event is expected to draw visitors from not just the region but also from the Middle East and beyond.

The conference is the only one of its kind, with industry leaders and experts deliberating in the Plenary sessions on a multitude of contemporary issues, primarily focusing on South Asia. The event promises the delegates attending a day filled with interactive knowledge sharing and networking opportunities amongst the South Asian IBF fraternity.

The IFFSA Awards Night to be followed in the same night, held for the third successive year, recognises the contributions made by individuals and institutions to the IBF industry in the South Asian Region. The IFFSA Awards is a competitive process where awards are given to entities servicing the South Asian IBF Market with several categories of awards presented.

The gala event is unique in its exclusive focus on the South Asian region, where entities will be recognised and honoured by their peers in an evening of fellowship and camaraderie.
