The Association of Professional Bankers (APB), in collaboration with the Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka (IBSL), has launched a pioneering certificate course designed for junior bankers titled “Journey with Progress – Certificate Course for Junior Bankers”. This comprehensive program is tailored to equip participants with the essential knowledge and skills required to excel in the dynamic and ever-evolving banking industry.

With APB’s core mission centred on promoting and facilitating studies in banking and related fields, this initiative reflects their vision to empower banking professionals from the onset of their careers. IBSL, as the leading institution in providing guidance and training for employees within the banking and finance sectors, continues its longstanding partnership with APB to foster professional growth and practical expertise.

The inaugural ceremony of the “Journey with Progress” program was held on Saturday, 31 August 2024, at the IBSL Auditorium. The event was graced by Hatton National Bank PLC Acting CEO and Managing Director Damith Pallewatta and attended by APB President Halin Hettigoda, IBSL Director General C.P.A. Karunathilaka, along with other dignitaries from IBSL and APB Council members.

In his welcome address, Hettigoda emphasised APB’s commitment to nurturing learning and development among its members from the earliest stages of their careers. He highlighted that enrolling in this program signifies a student’s dedication to enhancing their knowledge and competencies, marking an important step towards becoming a successful professional banker.

Karunathilaka, in his address, underscored the importance of true leadership and the value of balancing a dedicated banking career with personal life. The keynote speech, delivered by Pallewatta, provided young bankers with insights into the banking profession, focusing on the principles of dedication, accountability, and leadership.

The Junior Bankers’ program, consisting of eleven classroom sessions, will be conducted by seasoned banking professionals who bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the classroom. This initiative is yet another achievement of the APB’s Continuous Professional Development Committee, chaired by Ramonez Gunawardena.

APB General Secretary Anjali Goonetilake, delivered the concluding remarks at the ceremony, setting the stage for the first classroom session led by Jeremy de Zilva, a past president of APB, who focused on “Career Progression”.
