Agreement inked with Allianz Insurance for Suraksha Student’s Health Insurance

The Education Ministry has signed a tender agreement with Allianz Insurance for the Suraksha Student’s Health Insurance project lastweek.

The agreement was signed under the patronage of Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam. Education Secretary Nihal Ranasinghe signed the agreement on behalf of the Education Ministry while Managing Director Sureka Alwis signed on behalf of Allianz Insurance.

Allianz Insurance has agreed to provide insurance benefits from 1 December 2018 to 30 November 2019. Accordingly, the Ministry will pay a premium of Rs. 1.5 billion to the private insurance company which is much lower than the Rs. 2.7 billion paid to Sri Lanka Insurance for the first year of the project.

The Suraksha Insurance Scheme was launched in 2017with the aim of granting an insurance coverage for the student population of the country totalling more than 4.5 million.

Considering the experience gained during the first year of the insurance scheme, many benefits have been included in the agreement this year under the guidance of the Education Minister.

The Suraksha Student’s Health Insurance consists of three areas of benefits, namely health, sudden accidents and life insurance. Students of government, private, and international schools as well as those studying in pirivenas are entitled to these insurance benefits.

Under the health, Rs. 200,000 will be provided for hospitalisation at a government or a private hospital, Rs. 200,000 for outpatient treatment and Rs. 200,000 for serious illnesses as benefits to the students.

Under the coverage for accidents Rs. 200,000 for total disability and Rs. 150,000 to Rs. 200,000 will be offered for partial disability. Further, a sum of Rs. 200,000 will be provided to students for the death of a parent.
