The Ceylon Bank Employees Union (CBEU) has requested people to use ATMs and internet banking as far as possible as banks are struggling to operate with minimum staff.

In a statement issued yesterday, the union said that as banks are operating with only a minimum number of staff members, ATMs or internet banking should be utilised whenever possible so as to ease the pressure on banks on days they open for a limited number of hours.

Withdrawals can be done through the 5,031 automated teller machines (ATMs) that are located throughout the country and most ATM cards will work at all machines irrespective of which bank issued the card.

With regards to deposits, the CBEU said most banks also provide machines to enable deposits and this can be done by anyone even if the account holder cannot go to the bank.

Banks have taken measures to provide customers with hand sanitisers and actively clean the machines.
