CFA societies of Sri Lanka and Hong Kong webinar to explore global market uncertainty

CFA Society Sri Lanka and CFA Society Hong Kong will hold a webinar titled “Navigating Global Uncertainty: A US-Sri Lanka Perspective” on Tuesday, 10 September 2024, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. (HK) / 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (SL) on Zoom.

It will provide an insightful exploration of the current global economic landscape and its implications for the United States, Sri Lanka, and the broader world. In today’s rapidly evolving economic environment, understanding the key trends and factors shaping global markets is crucial. This dynamic session will examine the state of the US and global economies, highlighting both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Participants will gain valuable insights into the outlook for the US and global markets, with a focus on how these trends impact Sri Lanka’s economy. Key topics will include global commodity prices, interest rate movements, and investor sentiment.

The webinar will also provide an in-depth analysis of the anticipated trajectory of US Federal Reserve interest rates and their potential impact on financial markets and economic growth, both globally and specifically for Sri Lanka. The discussion will cover the possible effects of the upcoming US elections on economic policy, trade, and global markets, exploring how these developments could influence Sri Lanka’s economic path.

The webinar will feature Mewan Gunawardena, CFA, a seasoned banker with nearly two decades of experience in Global Markets. Currently, he is the Head of Asset and Liability Management (ALM) at Sampath Bank PLC, a leading private bank in Sri Lanka. He specialises in balance sheet strategies, focusing on optimising balance sheet efficiency and managing risks effectively, which contributes to Sampath Bank’s strong position in the Sri Lankan financial sector. Another distinguished speaker, Aidan Yao, CFA, is the Chief Global Economist at Long Shine Asset Management and a macroeconomist with over 16 years of experience in both public and private sectors. His extensive background includes managing Asia macro research for AXA Investment Managers and holding key economic roles at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. Aidan holds a Master’s degree in Economics and Finance from the University of Otago, New Zealand.
