Dr. Dharmasiri Kumaratunge joins Union Bank Board

Dr. Dharmasiri Kumaratunge 

Ex-Central Banker Dr. Dharmasiri Kumaratunge has been appointed to the Board of Union Bank of Colombo PLC as an Independent Non-Executive Director.

Dr. Kumaratunge has over 35 years of extensive experience in banking and finance, financial technology, IT and international trade, payment processing, information and communication technology and digital transformation. 

He held the position of Assistant Governor at the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) and was a Director of the Payments and Settlements Department at CBSL from 2016 to 2022. Additionally, he served as the Secretary to the Technology Ministry until September 2024. 

Dr. Kumaratunge currently works as a Consultant, Public Policy at Mastercard Sri Lanka and Maldives. 

He also served as Chairman of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka and the Information and Communication Technology Agency until September 2024. He has also served as a member representing various cabinet appointed sub committees on investigating and recommending effective utilisation of the Revenue Administration Management Information System (RAMIS) and Expert Committee Appointed to study on digital banking, blockchain technology and blockchain related industries. 

Dr. Kumaratunge has held several key leadership positions in several organisations, including Consultant in Public Policy at the Mastercard Sri Lanka and Maldives, Senior National Consultant for the International Trade Centre (UN), Consultant at the PayMedia Ltd., served as the board member of the LankaClear Ltd., (now LankaPay) and Lanka Financial Service Bureau (LFSBL), DirectPay Ltd., and CelaTa Tech Ltd. 

He was a member of the Governing Council of the National Institute of Business Management (NIBM) from 2019 to 2021. He also served as the Alternate Country Director for the Asian Clearing Union (ACU) and as Country Director for the SAARC Payment Council from 2016 to 2022. Earlier in his career at the CBSL, Dr. Kumaratunge worked in several departments in different positions including the Economic Research Department, Information Technology Department, Payments and Settlements Department, Centre for Banking Studies and Management Audit Department during his career at the CBSL. 

Before joining the Central Bank, he also worked at the Cooperative Wholesale Establishment (CWE) as a Manager of Export and M/S Thornton Panditharatne and Co. (Chartered Accountants).
