KPMG webinar on comprehending financial statements for non-finance managers

The KPMG Sri Lanka Academy on 14 February will present a virtual session on Comprehending Financial Statements for Non-Finance Managers from 3.00 p.m. onwards.

It will be conducted by KPMG Sri Lanka Partner Kamaya Perera and Akila Gunarathna who is a leading tutor for CIMA in Sri Lanka and an experienced finance professional. 

KPMG Sri Lanka said that despite the academic background of a manager, he or she will have to interact with the finance function and get involved in decision-making for which comprehending financial statements is essential. 

This does not mean that the manager should be a finance expert. The manager should not learn finance from the beginning but should understand some of the important principles that would help them comprehend financial statements better. 

Upon completion of the session, the non-finance manager should be able to understand the financial position and performance of a company and incorporate the understanding into their decision-making.

The session has been crafted carefully by analysing the industry requirements. It will not focus on a traditional teaching approach to finance, but instead a nimble approach on stimulating the thinking process of a non-finance manager to consider financial aspects when making business decisions.

Gunarathna works as the Head of Finance of Resus Energy PLC and is a veteran lecturer for CIMA case studies in Wisdom Business Academy. He is a Director in Sri Lanka Accounting and Auditing Standards Monitoring Board and serves as the Chairman of the IT steering committee. 

Apart from that, he is a member of The Association of International Certified Professional Accountants› MESANA (Middle East South Asia and North Africa) Regional Advisory Panel.

Perera is a Partner in the Advisory practice of KPMG and heads the Management Consulting Division, Integration and Separation Advisory Services. She also heads the National Development Assistance Sector which focuses on the public sector, development agencies and the private sector who invest in the country’s social and economic growth priorities. 

She also leads the AAOS (Accounting Advisory and Outsourcing services) and KPMG Executive Services Ltd. She counts 18 years’ experience in carrying out advisory engagements and Implementation projects for both Government and Private sector Institutions.
