New Chairman of HDFC Bank assumes duties

The new Chairman of HDFC Bank P.J. Jayasinghe assumed duties on 28 October. 

Previously, Jayasinghe has served at the Bank of Ceylon (BOC), the country’s renowned State owned commercial bank, from May 1977 to August 2015. By the time of his retirement, he was a Deputy General Manager.

His impressive career includes significant experience in various areas of banking. As a Key Management Person (KMP) at BOC, he has handled Branch Banking, Overseas Branches, Corporate Credit, Recovery, Treasury, Human Resource Management, Support Service areas and has functioned as Secretary to Corporate Management Committee, Credit Committee and as a Member of Asset and Liabilities Committee, Trustee Board of BOC Employees’ Pension Fund and BOC Employees’ Provident Fund. Further, he has covered up duties of the General Manager. Thereby, he has gained a vast amount of experience in all-important areas in banking and finance industry.

He has discharged his duties as an independent non-executive director of four subsidiary/ associate companies of the BOC, dealing with real estate, property development and hotel industry as the bank’s nominee. He also contributed to the education and professional development of banking sector over a long period by being a member of the Governing Board of Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka.

He served 13 months in LFC sector as Chairman/ Non-Executive Director of TFC, as invited by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. He has also carried out CEO functions of Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka from July 2017 to December 2018 as the Director General. 

He graduated from Sri Jayawardenepura University securing a B.Com (special) degree. He is an Associate of Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka. He also holds a Higher National Diploma in Human Resource Management from National Institute of Business Management. He has participated in a large number of local and overseas training programs to expand the horizon of knowledge and the skills relating to banking and finance.
