Photo Technica MD/CEO Harsha Malvenna which is Sri Lanka’s foremost and the largest dealer of cameras and photography equipment, recently said that ‘Nikon Mirrorless’ camera technology is taking photography world by storm.

Malvenna made these comments while speaking to media following a tour to Japan’s world renowned Nikon Corporation, where he received an intense update on latest trends in photography technology. Photo Technica, established in 1958, is the biggest player in all sectors related to photography and is the sole distributor of Nikon cameras.

Speaking further, Malvenna said: “The reflex mirror is a key component of a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera. It reflects the light coming in through the lens up to a prism, and into the optical viewfinder for the photographer to preview the image. While shooting the mirror flips up, a shutter opens and the light travels into the image sensor, thus captures the final image. However, in this system there is a marginal variance between the original image viewed and the image being photographed. Also, it can only be viewed only on screen after shooting.

“As the name suggests, a mirrorless camera is one that doesn’t require a reflex mirror. In a mirrorless camera, there is no optical viewfinder, instead, there's an electronic viewfinder (EVF) and the image is exposed to it all times.

“An EVF allows the photographer to preview the object when photographing on an electronic viewing window thus photographer is able to view the object in real-time from the EVF and shoot. Therefore, the results will be ‘what you see is what you get’ i.e. image you see and image you record is identical. This makes mirrorless camera technology the latest trend as well as the most advanced in photography technology,” Malvenna said.

However, this advanced technology comes at an extra cost. Any new technology, when introduced, is expensive. Henceforth, mirrorless cameras are expensive compared to traditional DSLR cameras right now.

In Sri Lanka, mirrorless cameras are becoming popular and Nikon is the most used mirrorless camera brand right now. It is quite possible that in the near future, the prices of mirrorless cameras will come down significantly. That being said, the traditional DSLR cameras are still widely used at the moment and are the number one choice for professionals and serious amateurs mainly wedding and wildlife photographers.
