SEC and CSE hold Investor Education Forum in Matale

  • Event shares key insights to make informed stock market investments

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC), in collaboration with the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE), conducted an Investor Forum in Matale on 23 October 2024 at The Grand Mountain Hotel, Matale. 

The forum is part of an ongoing effort to raise awareness on investor protection and emphasise the importance of educating the public about the investment opportunities in the stock market.

Attracting over 130 participants, the event provided valuable insights to both potential and existing investors in the Matale region, underscoring the significance of financial literacy and investor education in making informed investment decisions.

The event commenced with an introduction to the basics of investing at the Colombo Stock Exchange. The session, led by CSE Kurungegala Branch Manager Thusitha Meegahakumbura, covered the fundamentals of investing, offering participants an understanding of the process and the benefits of entering the market.

This was followed by a session on the role of the SEC in the financial markets, with a particular focus on investor protection. The presentation by SEC Manager – External Relations Nimal Kumarasinghe highlighted the SEC’s responsibilities in safeguarding investors’ interests and ensuring a secure and transparent market environment.

Further enhancing the understanding of digital investment tools, CSE Kandy Branch Manager Dhananjaya Abeysiriwardana, introduced the audience to the CSE Mobile App, explaining its features and how it facilitates easier access to the stock market. A video demonstration of the app further showcased its functionalities.

The forum continued with an analysis of the sectoral performance and market opportunities, led by Bartleet Religare Securities Research Analyst Iranga Fernando. This session provided attendees with valuable insights into the current state of various sectors and highlighted potential investment opportunities within the market.

The event culminated in an interactive panel discussion and Q&A session with the participation of Kumarasinghe, Fernando and CSE Senior Vice President – Marketing Niroshan Wijesundere. This segment allowed participants to engage directly with industry experts, clarify their concerns, and gain further understanding of the topics discussed throughout the forum.

Participants were also given the opportunity to meet with Investment Advisors from stockbroker firms and representatives from Unit Trust Management Companies after the session, facilitating personal interactions and further advice on their investment journey.

The SEC and CSE will continue their investor education campaign with upcoming forums planned in several locations, including Colombo and Galle.
