The Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC) commenced 2020 by continuing to enhance the financial literacy among the students, teachers, university undergraduates and lecturers through conducting a number of seminars and workshops islandwide.

Financial literacy is a combination of financial knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours necessary to make sound financial decisions, based on personal circumstances, to improve financial wellbeing. Improving financial literacy is a long-term behavioural change initiative. It requires a multifaceted approach and sustained action over time to bring about gradual improvement.

The SEC’s mandate to provide financial education starts from the school level by providing sound financial knowledge among school teachers and students. Moreover, since the subject of capital market is at present included in the Business and Accounting Studies for the G.C.E (Ordinary Level) and Business Studies for G.C.E (Advanced Level) curricula, the SEC ensures that its capital market awareness initiatives cover the contents in the school syllabuses.

In view of this the SEC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Education (MOE) to formalise the provision of trilingual financial education. The SEC conducts awareness programs in association with the MOE and Provincial Education Directors.

During the month of January the SEC conducted two Teacher Training Programmes in Theldeniya and Mathugama. Two undergraduate programs were held in Colombo and Sabaragamuwa. The SEC also conducted three more student seminars in Theldeniya, Mullaitivu and Vavuniya. More than 500 students, teachers and undergraduates participated at these workshops.

Five more programs for students and teachers will be conducted in Hakmana, Bibile, Balangoda, Elpitiya and Deniyaya during the month of February.
