Alliance Finance encourages 2000 students to think green

In its latest green initiative, Alliance Finance recently conducted the Inter-School Green Competition, with the contest’s three winning projects being funded by the company. Alliance Finance also undertook a parallel project to develop a rural school in accordance with its ‘I will if you will’ pledge. Twelve leading schools in Colombo took part in the competition. They were Holy Family Convent, St. Bridget’s Convent, St. Lawrence’s Convent, Gateway College, Carey College, Asian International School, Ananda College, Visakha Vidyalaya, Ramanathan Hindu Ladies’ College, Bishop’s College, Muslim Ladies’ College and Stafford International School. These schools, having participated in workshops organised by Alliance Finance to raise their awareness about the environment, proposed green projects to be funded by the company. Reputed environmentalist Vimukthi Weeratunga evaluated these proposals and picked the top three. First place was won by Asian International School for their project to enhance the environment of Sri Sangamiththa College. Second position went to Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya for their project to plant and maintain trees along the Marine Drive, while third place was won by Gateway College for a project to implement a waste management system. Project initiator, Green Pledge and Group Head, Alliance Finance Business Development, Ali Ahlam Nawaz commenting on the event stated: “Alliance Finance used Earth Hour as a platform to showcase to the corporate world the measures we are taking as a responsible organisation to help reduce the environmental impact through the concept of a Green Pledge which is fully driven by students. We are proud to say that we are Sri Lanka’s first triple bottom line focused financial services company.” Among those who spoke at this event were Alliance Finance Managing Director Romani De Silva, Project Initiator and Group Head, Business Development, Alliance Finance, Ali Ahlam Nawaz, Alliance Finance Chief Continuous Improvement Officer Andrew Samuel and environmentalist Vimukthi Weeratunga. In addition to funding these projects, Alliance Finance undertook a parallel project in line with its pledge, ‘I will if you will’. It has pledged Rs. 500,000 to meet the primary requirements of the Kalyanipura Primary School, a rural school in the Weli Oya area with 88 students.
