REUTERS: Stocks hit six-week closing highs on Tuesday, led by large caps such as Ceylon Tobacco Co PLC and Nestle Lanka PLC in thin volume, brokers said.
The main share index ended 0.51% or 29.95 points firmer at 5,897.05, its highest since 27 August.
Investors were looking at fundamentally strong stocks and were betting on shares such as Ceylon Tobacco and Nestle Lanka, dealers said. Shares in market heavyweight Ceylon Tobacco rose 3.69% to Rs. 1,115.20, while Nestle Lanka gained 1.71% to Rs. 1,995.00.
Foreign investors were net buyers of Rs. 48.1 million rupees ($ 366,800) worth of shares on Tuesday, extending the net buying so far this year to Rs. 20.74 billion.
The day’s turnover was Rs. 490.3 million, well below this year’s daily average of about Rs. 873 million.
