Clearing Association of Bankers 7th AGM today

The seventh Annual General Meeting of the Clearing Associations of Bankers will be held on 14 January at the HNB Towers at 6 p.m. The Association hosted the first ever seminar on ‘Cheque Imaging and New Trends in Banking’ in Sri Lanka for the members of the Judiciary, in order to further familiarise the Cheque Imaging & Truncation System (CITS). The event was held on 3 October 2015 at the Kingsbury Hotel, Colombo. 

Currently the association is in the process of finding solutions for the low quality in the MICR line in cheques. As the lack of quality in the MICR line often results in the MICR data not being scanned by the equipment used by banks, which leads to a large number of cheques being returned without payment.

The Clearing Association of Bankers was formed in 2008, following the implementation of the CITS by the CBSL, with the purpose of enhancing the knowledge of bankers in Sri Lanka as well as to promote goodwill, understanding and fellowship among those bankers engaged in clearing. 

During its seven years of existence the association has been involved in numerous projects and one of main items in the agenda is the prestigious and much awaited Inter Bank quiz. In the past the association has also had the privilege of hosting one of their Annual General Meetings aboard the prestigious ship, ‘Jet Liner’, with the Chief Guest being Central Bank of Sri Lanka Deputy Governor Ananda Silva. 

The Interbank Twenty20 Softball Cricket Tournament is a one of the major events in the association’s calendar. The tournament was held on 8 August 2015 at Moors Ground, Colombo 2, with the participation of a total of 25 teams. 

Throughout their short time of existence the Clearing Association of Bankers has played a major role in the development of the banking industry, and along with the upcoming Annual General Meeting there can be no doubt that the association will continue to thrive in the coming years.
