Colombo Stock Exchange initiates ‘Insight for Investing’

The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) is set to launch one of its numerous initiatives to promote an island wide investor awareness program. This will include investor days followed by education workshops throughout the island. The principal focus of the program is to educate the general public on the investment opportunities available at the CSE.



As stated by CSE Head of Marketing Development NiroshanWijesundere the main aim of the CSE is to attract and educate new and existing potential investors which will help them to make informed investment decisions in the CSE.  

‘Insight for Investing’ is set to attract a wide and broad group of potential investors, to give them a comprehensive understanding about investing in the Stock market. This will enhance the knowledge of the general public in relation to investing and prove that anyone can invest in the share market. The endless opportunities at the CSE will be demonstrated through this program while highlighting the fact that there are 285 listed companies and that even small investors can invest the share market.

The two tier program comprising of an investor day and an education workshop will see the participation of all the key stakeholders in the market including the CSE, Broker Firms and Unit Trust companies who will provide the public with a comprehensive understanding with regard to their specific roles and the interlinked mechanisms of the market.

The initial round of programs to be held in Nittambuwa, Negombo, Maharagama, Hambanthota and Puttlam will be launched on 15 September. Moreover, the program will have the participation of key stakeholders within the community including business organisations, professional associations, government, private and non-governmental organisations, although it will not be confined to these institutions.

The entrance to the Investor Days will be free of charge and will provide participants with an ideal one-on-one opportunity to raise questions pertaining to the market and plan their investments with Broker Firms and Unit Trust companies who will be present at the event. These one day events will contain quiz competitions, lucky draws for all participants, and in addition will provide an opportunity to sign up for the education workshops.

The second phase of the program constituting the education workshops will educate investors on financial statement analysis, portfolio management, unit trust, and how to start investing at the CSE. The educational workshops would be conducted in Sinhala, Tamil and English medium at a nominal fee of Rs. 500 per participant.
