The Commercial Bank of Ceylon completed a ‘Mobile Banking Week’ promotion offering free registration for its mobile phone banking services to customers of the Kotahena branch from 5 to 13 February 2014. The bank said it plans to extend this type of promotion to other branches as well. Commercial Bank’s Mobile Banking facility is operated on USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) technology used by GSM networks and is currently available on Dialog and Etisalat. With its easy to access menu-driven portal, USSD-based mobile banking offers greater convenience and functionality enabling users to carryout numerous banking transactions including account balance and credit card balance inquiries, utility bill payments, fund transfers, exchange rate inquiries, PIN changes, mobile reloads and request micro statements. Because these services are offered on the USSD platform, they can be accessed via any phone by simply dialling #8823#. The phones may range from a basic phone to the most advanced phone unit that is in the market. The service does not require an internet connection. Commercial Bank’s mobile banking service can be used to make outstanding payments in respect of credit cards issued by the bank, as well as cards issued by other banks. Users can also pay their water and electricity dues respectively to The National Water Supply and Drainage Board and CEB and LECO. Payment of insurance premiums to Ceylinco Life, Sri Lanka Insurance (Life and Motor), Janashakthi (Life), Union Assurance, AIA  Insurance, Asian Alliance (Life) and Amana Takaful (Life) is also possible, and pay TV subscribers of Dialog Satellite TV, LBN and Satnet TV can pay their bills using the facility. The only Sri Lankan bank to be ranked among the world’s top 1000 Banks for three successive years, Commercial Bank operates a network of 235 computer-linked service points and the country’s single largest ATM network of 585 terminals. The bank has been adjudged ‘Best Bank in Sri Lanka’ for 15 consecutive years by ‘Global Finance’ Magazine and has won multiple awards as the country’s best Bank from ‘The Banker’, ‘Finance Asia’, ‘Euromoney’ and ‘Trade Finance’ magazines.
