The Manipaiy branch of the Commercial Bank of Ceylon and the bank’s Agriculture and Micro Finance Unit (AMFU) at Atchuvely in Jaffna recently conducted an awareness program for grape cultivators in the Northern Province.
The program was conducted in collaboration with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) at the Commercial Bank Northern Training Centre in Manipaiy. Fifty farmers from the Manipaiy, Ilavalai, Vilan and Urumpirai areas where the main cultivation crop is grapes, participated in the program which was inaugurated by S.P. Rajeevan, the bank’s Regional Manager Northern Region.
Participants were provided with valuable information on financial literacy by Ranjini Vijayalan, the Central Bank’s Senior Manager Northern Region, Latha Janakan and Meenalogini Baheerathan of the Agriculture Department Thirunelvely on ‘Modern cultivation aspects in relation to grape cultivation.’
Commercial Bank has conducted programs for SMEs and micro entrepreneurs in areas such as Narammala, Galle, Monaragala, Wellawaya, Badulla, Passara, Bandarawela, Welimada, Weligama, Koggala, Karapitiya, and Matara in the recent past.
The bank’s Agriculture and Micro Finance units are located in Ratnapura, Narammala, Kandy, Anuradhapura, Kilinochchi, Bandarawela, Wellawaya, Hingurakgoda, Galewela, Atchuvely, Vuvuniya and Tissamaharama. They identify and support people who need financial assistance to start new businesses or expand existing ones, provide guidance on how to improve their businesses and help resolve difficulties.
