The Colombo Stock Exchange saw an avid response from students of the Chartered Institute of Accountants (CA), during a program held yesterday (24), to educate this segment of future professionals on the workings of the capital market. The event was held from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the CA premises in Colombo 7 with the participation of over 120 enthusiastic young accounting students and professionals. The event was opened to Current CA students including Strategic level I & II and Top CA Students. The program featured an engaging introduction to the capital market titled ‘Investment Opportunities in the Capital Market,’ presented by CSE Manager Research Nishantha Hewavithana. After this engaging presentation the floor was opened for those present to pose questions. Thereafter they were given the opportunity to meet with stock broker company representatives and unit trust representatives to discuss opening Central Depository System (CDS) Accounts to begin their expedition into investment. Many students raised queries and clarified doubts and misconceptions which they had about investment in the capital market. A key concern for many was the initial investment that would be required to venture into the capital market. In response to this enquiry, they were informed that large sums of capital were not necessary to invest in the market and thereby they could make a start in the investment world with a limited amount of funds. “The capital market is an exciting endeavour, especially for those who are interested in converting a part of their savings to rewarding investments. In this presentation we have only given some basic details of all the interesting information that is available to investors and potential investors. We hope that students take a fervent interest in investing in debt and equity and look at it as a challenging and rewarding experience,” Hewavithana said. “As a knowledge-based organisation we are keen on educating future generations of potential investors on the workings of the capital market. The CSE is of the opinion that in order to create the next generation of prudent investors who are savvy about the market, it is important to provide them with the information and skills necessary to make wise investment decisions, at an early stage in their educational and professional lives,” CSE Investor Relations and Branch Operations Assistant Manager Nishantha Batagalle said.
