Award winners were recognised for their continued dedication in their profession of insurance sales and for going beyond in protecting the dreams and aspirations of their clientele. The stylish affair was set under the theme of ‘A Sterling Performance – Beyond Silver, Towards Gold,’ referring to the company’s steady but impressive performance of 25 years.
Speaking at the event General Manager Marketing and Life Distribution Rukman Weeraratne said: “Today we are recognising the sales and support staff who have achieved levels of recognition benchmarked by the company. To be an award winner today is a significant achievement to the industry as a whole. Your commitment and effort has enabled UA to consolidate our position as a leading provider of life and general insurance solutions and we thank you for your dedication resulting in resounding success.”
The top award winners for the night were ‘Champion of Champions – Life’ Chanaka Appuhamy of the Chilaw Branch and ‘Champion of Champions – General’ Eric Upashantha of the Corporate Business Unit. It is important to note that the duo have consecutively won the said titles since 2008. The presentation of awards honouring excellence is bestowed upon distinguished persons whose achievements encourage others to emulate and follow – securing a successful career in the industry.

The best ‘Main Branch’ was adjudged to be UA’s Thambuththegama branch with Nikaweratiya branch recognised as the ‘Best Branch’ for 2012. 1st Runners up was adjudged as the Vavuniya branch with Matale and Akuressa both coming 2nd runners up island-wide.
UA has an extensive network of branches across the country, catering to an array of clientele in life and general insurance solutions. UA was one of the first insurers to set up shop in the north-east areas of the country, providing long term financial solutions and protection to the public. Most of the said dedicated professionals working tirelessly island-wide, and were recipients at this year’s annual awards. “This year, we pay tribute to the top achievers in the UA Sales Team who are very much part of the company’s 25 year history. These achievers have contributed greatly and there is no doubt that their effort will ensure that UA maintains its steady growth momentum in the years to come,” said Ajit Gunewardene, Chairman Union Assurance and Deputy Chairman of JKH Group.
UA’s combined Gross Written Premium (GWP) increased by Rs. 251 million to Rs. 2.7 billion in the 1st quarter of 2013 from Rs. 2.4 billion for the corresponding period last year. Non Life contributed Rs. 1.4 billion to the combined GWP, compared Rs. 1.1 billion in 2012. The Life insurance segment contributed Rs. 1.3 billion to the combined GWP. Total net revenue for the quarter increased to Rs. 2.8 billion (2012 – Rs. 2.4 billion), a 16% growth when compared to the same period in 2012.
