A meeting was held recently at the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) chaired by Deputy Minister of Investment Promotion Faiszer Musthapha, Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC) Chairman Dr. Nalaka Godahewa, CSE Chairman Krishan Balendra, SEC Officer-in-Charge/Deputy Director General Dhammika Perera, CSE Chief Executive Officer Rajeeva Bandaranaikeand and CEOs of stock broker firms. During the meeting the Minister expressed his intention to facilitate introductions between potential high net-worth and institutional investors and member firms at future foreign investor forums. Minister Musthapha emphasised the need to make introductions on a governmental level in order to ensure that Sri Lankan companies were able to pitch their investments directly to high net worth and institutional investors. “When we make introductions on a governmental level, it is easier to make connections between investors and Sri Lankan companies looking for equity,” he said. Such an initiative would harvest results in terms of the doors it would open for broker firms to approach the governmental decision makers and the foreign investors they would introduce. “During our Foreign Investor Forums, we place a greater emphasis on the one-to-one meetings between listed companies and potential investors,” Balendra said. “Certain investors are looking at buying equity in local companies, whereas others are more interested in Foreign Direct Investment. In particular countries like Australia, where there is such a concentrated interest in FDI, the BOI will lead the initiative through introductions made by the Minister on a governmental level,” Dr. Godahewa said. The meeting was concluded with the CEOs of broker firms agreeing to give a detailed plan on how these could be included in future investor forums.
