HSBC appoints New Head of Marketing, Group Communications and Corporate Sustainability

HSBC Sri Lanka has appointed Tharanga Gunasekera as Head of Marketing, Group Communications and Corporate Sustainability. He succeeds Nilantha Bastian, who has taken up the position of Head of Retail Banking and Wealth Management, HSBC Sri Lanka. 

Tharanga began his Banking career having joined HSBC in 2005 as Marketing Manager for Corporate Banking and was appointed to the post of Marketing Manager for Personal Financial Services in 2008. He was a member of the Bank’s management committee and will continue to contribute in his current capacity as an executive committee member.  Prior to which he held senior management positions in several multinational pharmaceutical firms locally. 

He has played an integral role in helping drive the Bank’s Corporate and Retail business to greater heights and has a strong track record in strategy development and execution in both business functions. He was also instrumental in launching many innovative campaigns to support the growth of the Bank’s product portfolio, covering HSBC Premier, HSBC Advance and Credit Cards, amongst others. 

He holds a post graduate diploma from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and a post graduate diploma in Marketing from the Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM). Tharanga also holds an MBA from the University of Leicester (UK). He heads the Market Interest Group (MIG) for financial services at CIM Sri Lanka regional office. He was educated at Trinity College, Kandy.
