The Insurance Board of Sri Lanka (IBSL), considering the growth in the insurance sector, international developments and facilitating access to insurance, is organising a workshop on microinsurance, on the theme ‘Promoting Microinsurance in Sri Lanka,’ to be held tomorrow (30) Hotel Taj Samudra, Colombo.
The objectives of the workshop are to build up an understanding of the relationship between microfinance and microinsurance sectors in Sri Lanka; to share successful empirical evidences and recent developments in microinsurance; and to discuss the way forward for the microinsurance sector in Sri Lanka.
IBSL believes that microinsurance will act as a catalyst in achieving overall development of the country since microinsurance is considered as a risk mitigating tool that can provide solutions for people in the ‘low income group’ to better cope with risks, related to sickness, death, etc.
Many invaluable topics such as global trends and lessons on microinsurance with empirical evidence, experiences in microinsurance and lessons learnt, overview of microfinance sector in Sri Lanka and need for microinsurance, microinsurance initiatives in Sri Lanka – lessons learnt, future of microinsurance in Sri Lanka and the way forward will be discussed at the workshop based on the aforementioned objectives.
Dr. Antonis Malagardis, Program Director of GIZ Regulatory Framework Promotion of Pro-poor Insurance Markets in Asia (RFPI Asia) is attending as a resource person to share his experience in the global microinsurance sector.
Representatives from the insurance industry, microfinance and microinsurance institutions and Government institutions are expected to attend the workshop.
