MBSL to host seminar on debt instruments for corporates and tax free return to investors

Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka PLC (MBSL) is organising a seminar on ‘Debt instruments for corporates and tax free return to investors’ to be held at Earls Court, Cinnamon Lakeside, Colombo on Thursday, 29 August 2013 from 4 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. The guest speaker to the event will be the renowned Adrian D. Perera, Chief Executive Officer of RAM Ratings (Lanka) Ltd., an establishment backed by the vast experience of the RAM Group and member of the Association of Credit Rating Agencies in Asia (or ACRAA). The areas that will be discussed include opportunities on debt instruments for corporates, types of debt instruments and its benefits for issuers, benefits for investors by investing in listed debentures and how to get ratings from rating agencies for debt instruments. The concessions awarded in Budget 2013 from the waiving off of withholding tax and interest income earned on listed debentures attracted large number of retail, high net worth and corporate investors and expected to attract more investors in future, considering the country’s interest rate scenario, although the size of the debt market is small. Economic volatility has made many investors seek cautious opportunities in the debt market. Therefore, knowing the debt instruments and opportunities available will be important for an investor and even for debt raisers. By attending this program, participants would be able to understand basics of debt instruments, associated terminologies and factors that affect pricing and its benefits for issuers and benefits for investors by investing in these instruments such as debentures, promissory notes, Treasury bills and bonds, commercial papers etc. and how to make a precise choice of investment decision. Further, the seminar will educate the participants on how to get ratings from the rating agencies for debt instruments and swift ways in which they can be adopted. Looking at the way forward, financial markets are growing in Sri Lanka, adding more complexity to the products offered to investors. Therefore, learning, understanding and knowledge about debt instruments is important for an investor as well as for a lender. This interactive awareness program will be followed by the panel discussion with industry specialists from related areas, including Thanuja Perera, Assessor – Secretariat and Tax Policy, Department of Inland Revenue, Prof. Ranjith Bandara, Director of Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka PLC, T. Mutugala, Chief Executive Officer of Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka PLC and A.M.A. Cader, Deputy General Manager – Corporate Advisory and Capital Markets of Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka PLC.
