NDB yesterday announced the appointment of Sunil G. Wijesinha as its new Chairman, following a board meeting held on Saturday, 30 November.
Wijesinha will be replacing Hemaka Amarasuriya who retired from his office as Chairman of NDB, following a long and illustrious career spearheading the bank’s successful transformation from a development financier to a fully-fledged banking conglomerate.
Wijesinha is a Chartered Engineer, a Chartered Management Accountant FCMA (UK) and has an MBA. His experience in the financial services sector include having been on the Boards of Sampath Bank PLC (as Deputy Chairman), Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka PLC (as Managing Director), Employees’ Trust Fund Board (as Chairman), Merchant Credit of Sri Lanka (as Chairman), Lanka Securities Ltd., DNH Financial Ltd., DFCC Vardhana Bank PLC, Colombo Stock Exchange, and Siyapatha Finance Ltd.
He is also the former Chairman and MD of Dankotuwa Porcelain PLC and his vast experience comes from directorships held in many other government and private sector organisations including Sri Lankan Airlines Ltd., MILCO, Colombo Dockyard, Sri Lanka Standards Institution, State Plantations Corporation, National Institute of Plantation Management, Maturata Plantations Ltd. and Asiri Surgical Hospitals PLC.
He is currently Managing Director of BizEx Consulting Ltd., Chairman of Watawala Plantations PLC, Chairman of United Motors Lanka PLC, Chairman of Employers’ Federation of Ceylon, President of the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka, President of Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Quality and Productivity, and Deputy Chairman of Siyapatha Finance Ltd.
He serves as a member of the National Labour Advisory Council, the National Administrative Reforms Council, EDB Advisory Committee on Ceramics and Porcelain and the Senior Minister’s Advisory Council on Science, Technology and Innovation.
An exponent of Japanese management techniques and a promoter of productivity, Wijesinha has been awarded the Regional Award 2005 by the Asian Productivity Organisation for his efforts in promoting productivity in the Asia Pacific region.
Consequent to the appointment of Wijesinha as Chairman of NDB, the Board of directors of NDB comprises of Sunil Wijesinha (Chairman), Ashok Pathirage (Deputy Chairman), Rajendra Theagarajah (CEO/Director), Trevine Jayasekara, Anura Siriwardena, Sarath Wikramanayake, Kimarli Fernando, Chandra Ekanayake, Sujeewa Rajapakse and Indrani Sugathadasa.
