Ranasinghe promoted as CB Deputy Governor

01The Central Bank said yesterday that the Monetary Board, with the concurrence of the Minister of Finance, has promoted Assistant Governor K.D. Ranasinghe to the post of Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) with effect from 30 April 2017.

Ranasinghe has nearly 31 years of experience in the Central Bank especially in the areas of economic and price stability and other agency functions carried out by the Central Bank. Prior to the appointment as a Deputy Governor, Ranasinghe held the position of the Assistant Governor in charge of Statistics, International Operations, Domestic Operations, the Employees’ Provident Fund and the Human Resources and Facilities Management Departments. 

Ranasinghe served as the Director of the Economic Research Department of the Central Bank before he was promoted as an Assistant Governor. Ranasinghe served as an Alternate Executive Director for Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Sri Lanka at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Washington D.C., US from August 2012 to April 2015.

Ranasinghe holds an MA in Economics from Michigan State University, US and a BA in Economics from the University of Colombo. He has participated in a number of international training programs in the areas of Macroeconomic Management, Macroeconomic Modelling, Monetary Policy, Public Finance, Debt Management and Strategic Management during his long career at the Central Bank. 

Ranasinghe currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka (IBSL). He also serves as a member of several boards of directors and committees representing the CBSL. 

He has also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Ceylon Electricity Board and HDFC Bank. Furthermore, Ranasinghe has participated in various national and international fora representing the Government and the CBSL. 

Being a member of the Monetary Policy Committee, Market Operations Committee, Foreign Reserve Management Committee and Investment Committee of the Employees’ Provident Fund, Ranasinghe has made a significant contribution towards achieving the core objectives of the CBSL.

Ranasinghe’s research interests are in the areas of public finance, growth and economic and social infrastructure. He has authored articles for South East Asian Central Banks (SEACEN) and CBSL publications in the above areas. 

He has also conducted a large number of presentations at various seminars and conferences on the broader topic of status of the economy. Prior to joining the Central Bank he was in the Sri Lanka administrative service and had also worked as a lecturer at the University of Colombo.
