Rose Cooray new Chairperson at HNB Assurance

Rose Cooray has been appointed as the Chairman and Non-Executive and Independent Director of HNB Assurance Plc with effect from 6 July 2015.

Cooray is a Director of HNB and was the Senior Director until 30 October 2014. She is a retired Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka where she served for over 35 years. She is a Director of Ceylon Guardian Investment Trust Plc, Ceylon Investment Plc, Prime Grameen Micro Finance Ltd., Sithma Development Ltd. and HNB General Insurance Ltd.

Upon her release from the Central Bank, she served the Ministry of Finance in the capacity of Director General of the Fiscal Policy and Economic Affairs Department for nearly six years, represented the Government on the Boards of DFCC Bank, the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology, Sri Lanka Telecom, Ceylon Electricity Board, De La Rue Currency and Security Print Ltd., Export Development Board, National Housing and Development Authority and represented the Monetary Board on West Coast Power Ltd. 

She has functioned as the Vice Chairperson of the Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka for five years and has served on a number of committees at the national level covering a variety of subjects representing the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank. She has also represented the Central Bank and the Ministry of Finance at various international meetings and seminars. 

Cooray has been involved extensively in policymaking and implementing projects and programs especially in the area of regional development and microfinance. She has wide experience in negotiating loans with multilateral and other donors as well as bilateral trade agreements on behalf of the Government. Her articles and papers have been published in professional journals.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Degree from the University of Ceylon, Peradeniya and a M.Sc. from the University of Strathclyde, UK.Following the appointment, the Board of Directors of HNB Assurance Plc comprises M.A.R.C. Cooray (Chairperson), M.U. De Silva, S.C. Ratwatte, A.J. Alles, J.A.P.M. Jayasekera, K. Balasundaram, D.P.N. Rodrigo, S.N. Wickramasinghe and S. Selliah.
