The Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC) is tasked with the dual mandate of regulating and developing the capital market of Sri Lanka. In its endeavour to develop the capital market SEC is committed to improving the financial literacy among various segments of society as well as industry participants. Accordingly, the SEC has decided to award 56 scholarships to 14 State universities (four scholarships for each university) for the Investment Analysis Training Program conducted by Amba Research Lanka Ltd. These scholarships will provide equal opportunities to high-performing final-year university students to advance their knowledge base and develop their skill set, via proper training, to find employment opportunities in the capital market. The Investment Analysis Training Program, which commenced its first batch on 3 August 2013, targets both final-year university graduates and professional accountants seeking employment in the capital market. Participants in the seven-week training program will follow a real-life investment analysis cycle, which includes analysing the competitive dynamics of a given industry, building detailed earnings models that capture a high level of revenue/cost driver detail, and establishing a defensible valuation range using multiple methods. Commenting at the event, SEC Chairman Dr. Nalaka Godahewa said: “The SEC is pleased to provide 56 scholarships to final year university students for the Investment Analysis Training Program conducted by Amba Research. We see it having huge benefits for the capital market and we believe it will enhance the talent pool. This kind of training will provide our university graduates with the requisite foundation skills to advance their employability within the industry. Creating education and awareness is a significant aspect of the SEC’s capital market roadmap, and we are glad to partner with Amba Research for this.” Amba Research Country Head and Director Chanakya Dissanayake commented: “We see significant demand from students of professional bodies for this training programme. There have also been a number of requests for scholarships from State universities as their students have requested financial sponsorship to attend this training program. The SEC scholarships will therefore help provide equal opportunities to those university graduates wishing to pursue a career in the capital markets industry.”
