The certification awarding ceremony for those who have completed training programs by the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Capital Market Education and Training (CMET) Division was held on Saturday at the BMICH.

Chief Guest was Senior Minister of International Monetary Co-operation and Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama and the Guest of Honour was Central Bank Governor Nivard Cabraal whilst SEC Chairman Dr. Nalaka Godahewa and Acting Director General Prof. Hareendra Dissabandara were also present.

Over 800 students received certificates from the SEC.

In his address, Dr. Amunugama said: “At a time we are actively seeking a vibrant capital market in the country, it is indeed a pleasure to see more people getting qualified in the field of finance, which will directly and indirectly help raise the overall capital market literacy of society.”

“The capital market as you are aware is a very important component of the financial sector which supplements the role of the banking system in the economic development of our country,” he added. The SEC as the capital market regulator is entrusted with the task of developing the capital market of Sri Lanka, apart from its regulators functions.

In keeping with the mandate, SEC introduced a qualification framework for capital market professionals with the intention of enhancing the level of financial literacy and professionalism among practitioners, stakeholders and general public of Sri Lanka. The programs specified in the qualification framework are implemented through the Capital Market Education and Training (CMET) division, the Education and training arm of the SEC. During the year 2012, CMET conducted various programs targeting different segments such as professionals employed in the financial sector, financial journalists and investors. CMET also completed a research grants project which was initiated with the intention of stimulating high quality research pertaining to the capital market of Sri Lanka.
