Seminar on “Credit transactions: Commercial and Legal Issues”

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka’s (BASL) Commercial Law Committee will hold a seminar on “Credit Transactions: Commercial and Legal Issues” on 21 November from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hilton Colombo. Speakers and Panelists will be President’s Counsels Dr. Harsha Cabral and M.U.M. Ali Sabry. The Panel Chairman will be Attorney-at-Law and Chairman - Seminars on Commercial Law Committee, BASL Malik Cader. Organisers said business organisations are compelled to perform credit transactions due to competition and other uncontrollable market conditions. In such situations, appropriate payments for the goods sold or services provided will be received at a later date. As such transactions would be completed after the credit period and upon receipt of the due payments, there can be adverse impacts and business risks of non-payments and bad debts. The organisations are at a very advantageous position to maximise sales and profits, if these credit transactions could be handled or managed effectively with due awareness of such adverse impacts and risks. Focus This seminar focuses on the commercial and legal aspects of such credit transactions, with the main objective of creating the awareness such credit transactions. Areas covered include definition/introduction to credit transactions and connected commercial and legal risks; legal status of customers or parties who would deal with such organisations; legal and commercial aspects of proper financial statements, correspondence and documentation; litigation and prescription, legal requirements and advantageous of timely actions; collateral and other securities which could be used to minimise such risks and specific documentation applicable to credit transactions such as cheques, promissory notes, bank guarantees etc. and settlements and management of such credit transactions at the pre-legal and legal stages. Audience The seminar will be useful for marketing managers, customer handling offices or other senior employees who deals with customers; senior officers who handle pre-legal and recovery matters including the officers who would represent organisation in similar matters; senior managers of the organisations; lawyers, legal officers, in-house counsel and other professionals and businessmen and entrepreneurs who wish to be aware of this subject.
