The new BOC Chairman

I nearly fell over in my chair when I read that a former Air Force Chief had been appointed Chairman of Bank of Ceylon – the largest bank in the country, with assets of over Rs. 1 trillion. BOC holds in trusts the deposits and savings of millions of Sri Lankans. It is not only State funds it manages. The Air Force Commander was certainly good as an Air Force Commander, but surely as the Chairman of the largest bank in Sri Lanka? The good gentleman true to Royal College style should have asked for another job and left banking to bankers. The poor man will be at sea when the management discusses SLFRS or ICAP or Basel. These days when the only qualifications of ambassadors or chairmen to be appointed is a connection to a VIP and not based on qualifications, what can we expect? I hope poor Roshan knows what he is getting into and knows his responsibility to the economy. R. Fernando
