Three Jaffna residents remanded over fake credit cards

Three residents of Valvetithurai in Jaffna who had allegedly had 15 fake credit cards in their possession were ordered to be remanded till 5 June by a Colombo Court. The three suspects had been arrested by the Special Task Force near Bristol Street in Colombo and they had been handed over to the CID for further questioning.

The CID, who is conducting investigations into the incident, alleged that the suspects had prepared fake credit cards fraudulently using the data of genuine credit cardholders. The CID further told the Colombo Fort Acting Magistrate that the exact amount of the fraud committed by the suspects was yet to be estimated.

The CID told Court that it was investigating the matter to ascertain whether the money earned through this fraudulent transaction had been remitted to a terrorist organisation. The CID alleged that the three suspects, Thangavail Dharmaseelan, S. Selvachrisnan and Appalingam Udaya Chandran of Valvetithurai, had committed a punishable offence that comes under Section 3(1) of the Payment Devices Fraud Act No. 30 of 2006.
