Two-day workshop on financial derivatives and risk management

The Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI), which comes under the purview of the Presidential Secretariat, will hold a two full day workshop on “Financial derivatives and risk management” commencing 9 June.



This is an introductory level programme focusing on certain basic level derivative instruments commonly used in developed and developing financial markets. Aim of the programme is to introduce the participants to various uses of derivative structures and their pricing techniques. No prior knowledge of the subject is required as the programme starts from the very basic concepts of derivatives and gradually builds upon trading and pricing aspects. This programme will focus on certain very common structures like Forwards, Futures, Options and Swaps which are indeed the most common instruments for hedging against adverse movements in equity, currency or interest rate markets. All the derivative instruments will be discussed from the aspects of Risk Management and Trading/Speculations.

The programme will be conducted by Farrukh Aleem Mirza, a seasoned finance professional with more than ten years of financial markets experience in Pakistan and USA. He has worked in Pakistan for more than eight years in Regulatory and Commercial financial institutions and has two years of proprietary trading experience of diversified asset classes including equity and currency options and Asset Backed securities in USA. Currently he is based in USA and runs a consulting firm Rates and Risk Analytics Farrukh is a GARP certified Financial Risk Manager and holds an MBA from Pakistan and MS Financial Engineering from University of Michigan USA.

The workshop will be useful to finance professionals especially related to Treasury including Middle and Back Office people; Risk Management professionals;

Internal and external auditors and students of Banking and Finance and others interested in this area are also encouraged to participate in this programme.

The workshop will discuss topics like- What are Financial Derivatives?; Why do we need Derivatives? Or Who are the users of Derivatives?; General Underlying Assets; Classification of Derivatives; Features of Some Basic Derivative Contracts and Hedging Strategies Using Futures; Trading Strategies Using Options; Pricing of Derivatives; Hints to Derivatives’ Pricing (Building Block Approach); and Derivatives are a Zero-Sum Game/Do they really add value?
