University of Colombo wins CFA Sri Lanka Research Challenge

  • Students advance to Asia Pacific Regional Final of the world’s leading investment research competition
CFA Sri Lanka announced yesterday that University of Colombo has won the local competition of the CFA Institute Research Challenge and now advances to the Asia Pacific Regional Final, where it will compete against other universities from the region. The University of Colombo team consists of Nadeera Udawatta, Samanmalie Herath, and Mario Ganeshathasan (Lecturer in Charge – Ganga Fernando). The following universities competed with the University of Colombo at the CFA Sri Lanka Research Challenge: University of Sri Jayawardenapura; Royal Institute; University of Moratuwa; Asia Pacific institute of Information Technology and University of Kelaniya. Each university sent a team of three-to-five students to participate in the local level of the challenge. This year, the teams performed research on Singer Sri Lanka PLC. The students presented their analysis and buy/sell/hold recommendations on Singer Sri Lanka Plc. Their presentation at the Sri Lanka Finals was the culmination of months of research; interviews with company management, competitors, and clients; and presentation training. The CFA Sri Lanka Research Challenge was the first step of two for a local team to advance towards the global final to be held in Atlanta, Georgia. The students from the University of Colombo will now travel to the Asia Pacific Regional in Manila, Philippines, 11-12 March 2015, where they will match their wits, analytical skills, and presentation abilities against other student teams from the Asia Pacific region. The winners of the three Regionals (Americas, EMEA, and Asia Pacific) will then advance to compete in the Global Final to be held in Atlanta, Georgia, USA on17 April 2015. CFA Sri Lanka Research Challenge Chair Zaffar Jeevunjee mentioned that this was the eighth consecutive year that CFA Sri Lanka has hosted the research challenge competition. “The competition, internationally, has been growing in stature every year, with more than 775 universities taking part in this year’s challenge. The local competition has also been seeing increasing interest and improvement year after year. “We would like to congratulate all the teams that took part in this year’s local level challenge and wish the University of Colombo the very best as it goes on to compete at the Regional Final. We would like to thank Singer Sri Lanka PLC and Singer Sri Lanka CEO Asoka Pieris for agreeing to participate as the Subject Company in this year’s challenge, as well as for all the time that they gave towards this competition.” This year’s CFA Institute Research Challenge hosted by CFA Society of Sri Lanka was sponsored by Colombo Stock Exchange, Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka, HSBC, CIMB Investment Bank, JB Securities Ltd. and Copal Amba.
