Singer Sri Lanka PLC, the country’s premier consumer durables retailer, successfully carried out the ‘Singer Super Chef Season 2’, a unique competition that commenced with an online competition and ended with a live cooking event.
The contestants for Singer Super Chef Season 2 were selected via a competition that was carried out on the Singer Sri Lanka Facebook page where fans were requested to submit their own recipes by inboxing the page. Over 200 unique recipes were sent in by enthusiastic cooking fans out of which 20 were short-listed after much deliberation. From these 20 short-listed recipes, the final 8 recipes were selected by for a Live Cook Off which provided the competitors the rare opportunity of showcasing their culinary talents and passion for cooking to a large online audience by courtesy of the Facebook Live streaming.
The Live Cook Off segment of the competition, held at Singer Mega Mount Lavinia, was divided into three main categories – “Beko Best Baked Dish”, “Moulinex Most Creative Dish” and “Mystery Box Challenge”. The three winners were Kesheni De Hoedt from Kadawatha in the “Beko Best Baked Dish” category, Sharleen Fernando from Colombo in the “Moulinex Most Creative Dish” category and Sheruza Shakir from Dehiwala in the “Mystery Box Challenge”. A panel of judges reviewed all the culinary creations based on pre-defined criteria after which all winners and runners-up received valuable Beko, Moulinex, Tefal and Singer kitchen appliances.
With over 442,000 Likes, the Singer Sri Lanka Facebook page is known to have the highest number of fans in the electronics and consumer goods market of the country. In parallel with the Singer Online Store, the Facebook page is constantly posting flash deals, special promotions and seasonal offers to its expanding customer base. Expressing his views, Singer Sri Lanka Director Operations Chandana Samarasinghe stated, “Last year’s Singer Super Chef was a big success and therefore we decided to not only have a Season 2 of this exciting culinary competition, but also expanded it by introducing a live cook off that broadcasted event highlights and photographs on the Singer Facebook page. With the success of this year’s event, we are making plans to take this event to the next level in the future.”
Commenting on the successful competition, Manager Culinary and Education Sujiva Withana stated, “The Singer Super Chef Season 2 generated excitement among housewives interested in cooking and created a significant level of engagement, especially among housewives in Colombo and suburbs. We hope to expand the competition into other parts of the island in the future. This will give our customers and fans from around the island the platform to share their wonderful recipes and demonstrate their love for cooking.”
She added that Singer School of Culinary Arts, of which she is the head, has come up with a host of cookery classes that covers general cookery, Sri Lankan cookery, cake-making, pastry-making and microwave cooking. “Microwave cooking is especially useful in the months of July and August when Sri Lankan students pursuing their education abroad fly down for their summer holidays. We teach them how to make an entire rice and curry meal using only the microwave oven,” she added.
