The year 2020 has been dubbed as a ‘magical’ one that will no doubt bring a lot of good things to pass. When it comes to a place where ‘all good things combine’, The Cauldron is gearing up for a year filled with new ideas in terms of their food, service delivery, outreach programs and events held at this unique space.

Established in 2017, The Cauldron brought in a new lease of life to Colombo’s saturated café culture with innovative takes on local favourites and affordable comfort food. The artsy space with its cosy atmosphere and pop culture memorabilia also played host to many events in 2019. Among them were successful open mic events, collaborations with The Soup Kitchen providing warm meals to the underprivileged and many more. The Melting Open Mic Sessions with Avi were a great success and have grown in popularity among the cafés regulars. Coffee Saturdays that provide insight in to the history of coffee and specialty coffee tasting sessions have also been immensely popular.

Perhaps the feather in the cap for The Cauldron last year was when their homegrown barista Prashan won the Colombo edition of the National Barista Championship and went on to be crowned the Runners-Up at the National event. Prashan’s rendition of mixing in our local coconut cream in to a signature coffee was highly acclaimed by the international coffee expert panel of judges at the event.

The Cauldron also introduced a variety of novel food and beverage options to its menu over the last few months starting off with one of Harry Potter’s favourite drinks, the Butterbeer. The drink was well accepted among The Cauldron’s returning clientele. The menu continues to serve favourites like the Pol Rotti Kottu with the (secret) sauce that still remains a mystery, the Pol Rotti Burger and Bubble Waffles with both sweet and savoury toppings. The café is also famous for its ‘meatless’ toppings that definitely make you feel like you’re not missing out on anything by dropping the meat.

For the Christmas season, The Cauldron added to its vegetarian options a mock Turkey dish that was quite simply put out of this world. Served with Spiced Pumpkin Puree this was initially a festive addition but its popularity might well make it a staple on the menu. On the beverages menu the Bounty Shake which brings to life the elements of coconut and chocolate packed in the chocolate bar is a must-try in the New Year.

Resolving to wake up early in 2020, The Cauldron also introduces Jump-start Brekky with Coffee or Tea starting from just 300 rupees. Available from 7am onwards daily the breakfast menu consists of Kaya (Coconut Jam) for the early morning sugar rush or Kade Paan Toasties with either Coffee or Tea.

As the café embarks on its third year, the interior space has also been modified to create private nooks for groups of friends to enjoy. The kitchens have also been expanded to cater to growing demand.

The Cauldron has also become synonymous with a very different service culture where each guest is greeted with warmth and treated like family on every visit. Running down from the Founders of the café themselves, this ethos is probably why many customers choose to return to the café time and time again.
