The finals of ‘Cook for your Heart’ cookery competition, organised by Abans & Philips, was held on Saturday 4 October 2014 at Abans Kollupitiya Elite Showroom amidst a large audience of health conscious people. This program was initiated to mark World Heart Day.
Through regular advertisements in the print and electronic media, over a period of more than a month, the public were invited to send in their healthiest recipes, and those who submitted the 10 best recipes were selected for the grand finale.
To start of the day’s interesting program, Abans chefs demonstrated the preparation of a Grilled Fish, a healthy dish using the innovative Philips AirFryer. The Philips AirFryer uses state-of-the-art advanced Rapid Air Technology for various cooking purposes without using oil. The Philips AirFryer is a unique appliance that fries and cooks tasty dishes substituting air for oil. This patented rapid air technology lets the hot air flow evenly within the appliance to cook mouth watering food with 80% less fat within minutes.
It also ensures a faultless texture and taste and preserves the nutrition and flavour of the food. It has been endorsed by the Independent Medical Practitioners Association of Sri Lanka as a cooking appliance which is highly beneficial to your health.
The next item on the agenda was the Cook for your Heart cookery competition. 30 minutes time given for preparing their own recipe of Grilled Fish in the Philips AirFryer; points were given for time taken, presentation, taste and cleanliness; points were to be deducted if the given time was exceeded.
Of the 10 finalists four were selected for the first round, three for the second round and three again for the third round. It was a very difficult decision for the panel of judges as all contestants fared very well and the points scored were so close that the difference between the winner and first runner-up was only 0.5 points. The winner of Abans-Philips Cook for your Heart 2014 was Amani Lasanthika who received a Philips AirFryer as the first prize. The first runner-up Indira Peiris received a Philips Food Processor and the second runner-up Sakunthala Elanganathan received a Philips Induction Cooker. All finalists received consolation prizes and everyone in the audience was given free handouts.
In between the first and second round of the cookery competition there was a very interesting and informative talk given by Dr. Akthar Hazari, vice president of the Independent Medical Practitioners association (IMPA) on health benefits and healthy living practices. The attentive audience was very impressed and asked many pertinent questions from Dr. Hazari who gave crisp and clear answers which amplified his long experience as a popular medical practitioner.
While the judges were deciding on the winners of the cookery competition there was a very interesting quiz competition on the Philips AirFryer where everyone from the audience got a chance to win valuable gifts. Thereafter, five people from the audience volunteered to say a few words about the event. They were all very thankful to Abans and Philips for organising such an educational and informative as well as fun program. All five were given token gifts.
The program ended as usual with a dance competition and more prizes. Everyone had a very enjoyable time and no one left without a gift.
