History of what is popularly known as ‘High Tea’ dates back to the early nineteenth century, when it is rumored that Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford was the pioneer in starting this fabulous trend. She is said to have complained of “having that sinking feeling” during late afternoon.  When it was usual around that time to only have two meals a day, she requested to have a pot of tea and a snack in her boudoir during the afternoon.  She later invited her friends to join her and then from there it caught on with other social hostesses. What is not well known is that, the traditional upper class would serve a ‘low’ or ‘afternoon’ tea around four o’clock, while the middle or lower classes would have a more substantial ‘high’ tea later in the day. The names originated due to the height of the tables on which the meals were served, high tea being served at the dinner table; hence, the term ‘high tea’ was coined. Taj is delighted to present to diners, an ‘Afternoon Tea’ at a luxurious setting of their newly renovated lobby, in the outlet – ‘Lattice’. What one is sure to find here, amidst a plush setting, while being serenaded to the quiet tunes of the piano, is an elegant spread of Afternoon Tea in true English style. Guests with a sweet tooth can indulge in freshly baked scones with clotted cream, macaroons, or chocolate truffles, while those who prefer something savoury  can treat themselves to prawn pies , lamb cutlets or a nice smoked salmon sandwich to name a few.  It goes without saying that the cuppa that is served at Taj is the authentic Ceylonese Tea that Sri Lanka is renowned for. Elegantly dressed wait staff brew the type of tea that one would request whether it be the Sudu Weli Pothahena – which is a stronger version , to a Taj Elite, Heavenly Taj or even Queen of Taj – which are more milder versions, and are best enjoyed without any sugar.  Enjoy the ‘Perfect Tea Timer’ which has three hourglasses indicating the perfect brew that you require – whether it is a three-minute brew for a light tea, a four for a mild tea or a five-minute brew for the more stronger tea. Whether you are after a long day of shopping, or just want to be pampered with a great cup of tea in a beautiful setting, Lattice at Taj is ‘the’ place to be.
