Once again it’s that time of the year when Sinhalese and Tamil Sri Lankans celebrate the traditional New Year. According to Sinhalese mythology, New Year begins when the sun moves from Meena Rashiya (the house of Pieces) to Mesha Rashiya (house of Aries). It also marks the end of the harvest and spring. This is a time when rains enliven the spirit of nature as flowers bloom, and trees get laden with fruits.
And of course the best part of the festival is the abundance of good food! Traditional sweetmeats play a major role in making this festival a rich and prosperous one. Each and every Sinhalese and Tamil home prepares a table full of various sweetmeats to bring their families, friends and loved ones together to celebrate the dawn of their New Year.
The Kavili made available at the Lobby Lounge are specially designed and prepared by the Taj patisserie.
